Stroger Hospital is part of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services, the largest component of the safety net for health care in Chicago and suburban Cook County. The hospital is located in the Illinois Medical District on Chicago’s Near West Side, adjacent to Rush Medical College. Cook County and Rush are academic partners in medical education and research.
I would like to welcome you to the website of the Department of Anesthesiology at John H. Stroger Jr. (JHS) Hospital of Cook County. JHS Hospital of Cook County is located on the near west side of the city of Chicago, just a few minutes from downtown. In addition to being a major metropolitan center, the beautiful city of Chicago is at the crossroads of many ethnic and cultural influences. Many world class institutions call Chicago home. Our hospital is a state of the art facility and a major trauma center for the city and its surroundings. Our anesthesiology department is a busy and dynamic service, the depository of a great tradition in many areas, most especially in regional anesthesia, thanks to the efforts of Dr Alon P. Winnie, a pioneer in the field and a former chairman of the department. As a result our physicians, trainees, nurses and ancillary personnel have the opportunity to work in a modern facility that is both enjoyable and challenging and live in a city that offers world class intellectual and cultural amenities, a dramatic architecture with Lake Michigan as a backdrop, professional sports, recreational parks, and some of the best culinary experiences in the country.
Our hospital is part of the Cook County Bureau of Health, which is composed of JHS Hospital of Cook County, Provident Hospital, Oak Forest Hospital and several outpatient facilities. We also form part of the Illinois Medical District, one the largest concentration of medical facilities in the world, comprised of our own JHS Hospital of Cook County, Rush University Medical Center, Illinois University Medical Center and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.
The faculty in our staff is composed of a healthy combination of experienced physicians and young people who share a strong commitment to patient care, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. Our anesthesiology residency training program offers a modern and exciting environment for education and training which is second to none.
